Join a Team
Sign up with a sport and social club to get a great workout and make new friends.
Join the club. There are sport and social clubs across the country that offer everything from football to beach volleyball, tennis to soccer, at various competitive levels. Some include yoga and Pilates classes, while others have sports such as curling in the winter months. Most sports have a national association that can point you in the direction of a local club, or you can contact your community centre about drop-in and pre-registered leagues.
Signing up. One way is to gather a group together and sign up at a league. However, as the organizer, you may also be asked to take on the responsibilities of the team captain: collecting fees, scheduling practices and finding replacements for sickies or dropouts. A less stressful option is to ask friends and co-workers for spots available on their own teams. Or, you can join a league as an individual and organizers will put you on a team. Bonus: This is a great way to make new friends!
How much? Costs vary by region and sport. It can be as low as $40 for an individual all the way to $2,000+ for a team. Seasons last about 2 months and include weekly games and playoffs.
Age specific. Not quite as fit as you used to be? Check the recreation guide from your local municipality to find activities organized by age group. Go Team!
