The first time I made a cake for my wife's birthday I omitted to cut off the round portion on all four tiers. I used more icing on the sides to keep it level. I then hid the cake on the top level of the pantry - once it was time to pull out the cake and display it proudly to her (my very first cake after all) I opened the cupboard only to find a tier on each lower shelf - what a mess!
