Easy DIY Pumpkin Decor

Crafty ideas to bring home the harvest theme

Mantel Piece
To transform gourds and pumpkins into candle holders, simply slice off tops, scoop out the mush and place tapers into the openings. Or, cut a bigger opening and drop a tea light inside. Line up gourds along a mantel and weave in stems of wheat for added texture.

Pumpkin Patterns 101

  • Varied lines, random dots or criss-crosses are the quickest and easiest patterns.
  • Draw the pattern first with chalk or a pencil.
  • Use a drill for big holes and a hammer and nail for small ones.
  • To get really creative, use carpentry tools like a wood gauge or linoleum cutters, available at hardware stores.

Homemade Purée
Make the most of your pumpkins with this easy purée recipe.
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Wash exterior with warm water. Cut pumpkin in half. Using a spoon, scrape out seeds and string-like flesh. Remove stem and place both halves in an ovenproof dish, filled with 1-1/2 inches of water. Bake until fork-tender, about 45 minutes.
  2. When cool enough to handle, scoop out flesh and process in a food processor until smooth.
Rule of Thumb: 1¾ cup of purée equals one 14-oz can.
