Cool Collaboration

Cool Collaboration

As you’re reading this I’m probably waiting in line at H&M to scoop up their latest designer collaboration by Comme des Garçons. The intellectually cool collection for men and women, designed by Rei Kawakubo, hits stores today (Nov. 13) and is sure to sell out fast. On my must-have list are the adorable CdG-signature, polka-dot shirts and the perfect black trench.

Online Outlet

Online Outlet

I practically had to pinch myself when I found Miu Miu, Michael Kors and Miss Sixty at deep discounts – and only a quick click away! Newly available to Canadian customers, overstock.com, the online American outlet, now ships north of the border. Shoppers are automatically geo-located so that prices are in local currencies (even adjusted for fluctuating exchange rates). Check out the Designer Store for big label accessories or peruse the Worldstock collection for handmade gifts, the sale of which benefits underprivileged artisans.

All Set For a New Look

All Set For a New Look

Smart Set has long been my resource for great tees and tanks, but it’s about to offer much more in terms of style. The stores have a brand new, boutique-like design and carry even more fashion-forward items, including an already successful denim collaboration with Parasuco and a new athletic line called Muv. But my favourite new addition to the stores has to be the change rooms – they've created little nooks for your bag, sunglasses and cellphone, to keep everything off the floor while you try things on – genius!

L'Oréal Fashion Week – Day 5

L'Oréal Fashion Week – Day 5

As L’Oréal Fashion Week wound down in Toronto, we made our way to the tents one last time to indulge in warm-weather wear (especially welcome since the thermometer has dipped into single digits!).
Toronto Fashion Incubator winner Eugenia dazzled fashion fans with her collection of ‘cocktail attire.’ The pieces were classic yet edgy, with pleats adding visual appeal and volume to the clothing. Made locally with organic fabrics, the clothes were versatile and appealing to both fashionistas and eco-conscious women alike!
Nada Yousif’s collection screamed glam New York rock ‘n’ roll! Black fringed skirts, rainbow tulle skirts and black and gold lamé skinny pants were all paired with ribbed tanks spray-painted ‘I ♥ NY.’ Floor-length, fitted gowns added an air of sophistication to an otherwise edgy collection.
Young designer Janet Hill debuted a punchy and playful collection (sold in some of Toronto’s toniest boutiques!). Tie-dyed silk in fluoro brights and saturated solids were expertly cut into flirty tunics, billowy blouses, slinky camisoles and swirling, satin one-shoulder dresses (smartly dressed down with simple flats). Paired with ankle-length dark denim, her look exudes sweet summer style.
The inspiration for Mellinda-Mae Harlingten’s collection came from three seemingly unrelated genres: 1920s garçonne, 1970s bohemia and Native American beauty. The pieces were simple, yet luxurious and feminine. The colour palette was soft and romantic. Flowing silks were paired with structured pieces such as plaid vests, and soft, white cashmere sweaters added comfortable elegance.
At Lucian Matis, cream silk dresses in both body-conscious and boxy cuts were printed with large, digital, pixelated, red flowers giving them a futuristic, graphic look. Lots of embellishment (ruffles, pearls, beads and delicate acetate squares) adorned many of the eye-catching pieces, making it a standout collection.
Afshin Feiz – new to the L’Oréal Fashion Week lineup – was an instant hit with a supremely romantic runway presentation. Evening gowns as light as air seemed to catch the wind and billow up behind the models like clouds of smoke. With juxtaposing rows of tiny ruffles and heavy silver chains, the pastel-coloured clothes seemed to float down the runway. The designer also offered flirty, cut-out cocktail dresses, and chic pantsuits with long jackets, roomy pants and sexy bustiers.
Last, but certainly not least, was Montreal designer Denis Gagnon. Simple swaths of jersey were artfully woven, twisted, pulled and puckered into spectacular cocktail dresses and evening gowns, each more stunning than the last. Gagnon played with draping, asymmetrical hemlines, shots of vibrant lipstick-red against raspberry, leather pieces and lamé. Competing for the spotlight were his daring accessories: vertiginous, vinyl platforms, chunky, resin necklaces in organic shapes (think feathers and floral bouquets) and black, leather bubble bags for Fullum & Holt.

L’Oréal Fashion Week – Day 4

L’Oréal Fashion Week – Day 4

Fashion-week essentials in hand (coffee cup, camera and notebook), we hit the tents to see what the Day 4 designers had in store.
Born from the vision of two talented designers, the League of Lovers & Thieves show reflected an appreciation for the architecture of nature and the universe. Soft, organic fabrics were draped over the body, but detailed enough to give the clothing structure and form.
Evan & Dean showcased a clever combination of colours, textures and shapes. From glistening whites and charcoal greys, to bright corals and golds, each piece was adorned with bold flower appliqués – truly functional, wearable art!
Effortless drop-waist dresses and fluttering accordion-pleat skirts made their way down Renata Morales’s runway. Punctuated by oversized, black-lacquer, bouquet headbands, the dresses-only collection was incredibly intricate. The faint glimmer of sequins beneath layers of gossamer, the landscape and quirky cartoon prints and the heavily appliquéd bodices were simply stunning.
Best known for their super-soft leathers, Rudsak certainly didn’t disappoint. Their loyal followers will delight in secret-agent trenches, skin-tight stovepipes, tough biker jackets and supple shoulder bags. If you’re not ready for a head-to-toe leather look, new for spring are waxed cotton, twill and nylon pieces with subtle skin details (think piped pockets and trims).
Stay tuned for more L’Oréal Fashion Week coverage from the front row!

L’Oréal Fashion Week – Day 3

L’Oréal Fashion Week – Day 3

With a jam-packed schedule in hand, we hit the big white tents to soak up some spring style on Day 3 of L’Oréal Fashion Week.
Carlie Wong (of Project Runway Canada fame) debuted a sophisticated sophomore collection. Ultra-feminine shapes, decorated with cascading ruffles, silky bows and ruching, were expertly played against industrial tones of grey, slate, stone and icy blue. The packed crowd couldn’t stop gushing about her gorgeous cocktail dresses and red-carpet-worthy gowns.
Inspired by Virginia Woolf’s Orlando, Zoran Dobric’s collection was both geometric and feminine. The show was dynamic with a range of textiles – from cotton to georgette to chiffon – in a natural colour palette. Dobric’s hand-drawn illustrations screened onto the fabrics gave the show a beautifully artistic touch.
Thien Le proved he was the ultimate mix master at his latest show. Juxtaposing textures, patterns, fabrics and colours, he sent an eclectic collection down the catwalk. With botanical florals, hot tropical colours, animal prints, crystal embellishments, stripes and sequins, there was something for everyone!
Sparkle and shine ruled the runway at Andy Thê-Anh. Jewel-encrusted bib necklaces peeked out from underneath unzipped, structured peplum jackets; giant, cut-crystal broaches adorned softly draped dresses and severely seamed shifts; and beaded hairpins decorated the models’ slicked coifs. Other highlights included rows upon rows of sweetly pleated panels across feminine blouses, skirts and dresses, and three dreamy goddess dresses in shades of coral.
Zippers, ties, hoods, drawstrings and a generous dose of nylon signaled sport wear was in store for spring at Joe Fresh. Puffy balloon skirts styled with cute tennis tops, and slimmed-down sweatpants with little jackets and sweaters will make easy additions to our wardrobes. And since the navy, elastic and patent, peep-toe flats are only $24, we might just scoop up the patent platforms ($29) and tomboyish leather oxfords ($59) too!
Keep checking back every day for our complete coverage of L’Oréal Fashion Week!

We Scare Because We Care

We Scare Because We Care

Fashion Cares is one of the most talked about events of the year. With funky fashion shows and high-profile performers, the party always surpasses expectations while raising money for the AIDS Committee of Toronto (more than $10 million to date!). But this year they are shaking things up by moving the event from spring to fall, and adding a spooky Halloween twist. Guests have always dressed to impress, but now extravagant, fanciful costumes are a must. Expect Halloween, Hitchcock and haute couture all in one. On Nov. 1, Fashion doesn’t only care, it sCares!

L’Oréal Fashion Week – Day 2

L’Oréal Fashion Week – Day 2

Winter winds and even light snow couldn’t keep us away from the tents to see the designers’ day-two creations.
Inspired by travel, the Diesel Kids collection, complete with an airplane set and in-flight safety instructions, had the models decked out for every destination. Ready for summer fun, the kids were outfitted in casual beachwear and ranch-ready pieces.
Back at The Studio, Jason Meyers debuted a series of black dresses cut from raw silk and black lace. He covered all the bases – from formal black frocks, to playful polka-dot cocktail dresses, flirty bubbles and ruffled, silk-charmeuse dresses in bright canary yellow and turquoise.
Extra-large, X-ray floral prints in dusty rose, crisp white and dramatic black, accented with shots of lavender and magenta, were splashed across both day and eveningwear at Michelle Turpin’s Karamea collection. Well-tailored jackets, classic trousers and jersey dresses were feminine, functional and elegant.
Joeffer Caoc’s “Nude” runway theme was bang on with the Spring international runways. A parade of loose and languid pajamas, soft crop pants and easy dresses barely touched the body. Minimal shifts were smeared with painterly swaths of black and grey or smattered with alternating stripes of matte and shiny sequins. A lovely shift of focus from past seasons filled with goddess dresses.
Against a backdrop of the South African plains, models sashayed down David Dixon’s runway (a mere 45 minutes late!) in classic shapes with a tribal twist. Horn buttons, alligator embossed belts and his own collection of strappy sandals for Town Shoes complemented blown-out florals and gauzy, translucent croc-print fabrics on shift dresses, coats and jackets. But the opening floor-length, head-to-toe fringe dress had to be the collection standout.
Stay tuned for more catwalk coverage!

L’Oréal Fashion Week – Day 1

L’Oréal Fashion Week – Day 1

Despite the downpour, Torontonians came out in droves for the opening of the Spring 2009 shows at L’Oréal Fashion Week. We ran over to the large tents at Nathan Phillips Square to catch the first show of the season, Alfred Sung’s bridal collection. Beaded accents, satin bows and streamlined silhouettes had us all dreaming of fairy-tale weddings. Signaling the opening of the brand new Studio tent, designer Katya Revenko showcased her Desperately Different line. The all-knit collection featured an array of fabrics – from organic high-tech to UV protective. With soft tones of lavender and aqua, the pieces were flowing, geometric and slightly edgy. Top Canadian model, Taryn Davidson, brought sexy-secretary-meets-Sandra-Dee to life at Pink Tartan. Silk head scarves, scarlet lips and classic structured bags, along with retro halter maillots, leopard-print wrap dresses and sorbet-coloured shifts were pure “glamour girl.” For the more impatient fashionista, Mango showcased its current Fall 2008 collection. The cozy sweaters, flirty dresses and metallic accessories are the must-haves of the moment. Stay tuned as the week unfolds at the tents!

Summer sandals can take a toll on our feet – especially until we’ve had a chance to break in that fabulous new pair of strappy gladiators! Instead of blistered and bandaged battle scars, choose cushiony comfort in the form of stick-anywhere invisible gel pads from Tana. You plan to escape to the Bahamas for a vacation and do nothing but spend your days relaxing on the beach. Your suitcase is packed with swimsuits and flip-flops, but you might be lacking another equally-important essential – the perfect beach cover-up. Created by Jessica Fenton and Alana Konopny, Laleeta beachwear specializes in exotic, cabana-inspired tunics made out of 100% Indian cotton (a super-light fabric, perfect for withstanding the hottest temps). Worn at night with a pair of heels, or dressed down with flats and a bikini for poolside lounging – these tunics will work both ways. I especially love that they come in a variety of deliciously vibrant colours and Indian-inspired patterns, making them the perfect match for an afternoon in the sun with a cool summer cocktail.

Looky Here!

Looky Here!

I recently attended a party at West Queen West jewellery boutique, Made You Look. I had passed by the store many times before, but never ventured in and never quite understood what set it apart from other jewellery shops. But as soon as I stepped inside, the difference was apparent – there was a huge, state-of-the-art jewellery creation studio at the back of the store. Twenty in-house designers work on site 24-7, and are available to discuss their work or even consult on a custom design for you. Owner Sarah Hamel pitched the idea for the studio/store while still a student in George Brown College’s jewellery arts program. Her classmates loved the concept and a few signed up on the spot. Some are even still working out of the space today – seven years later. Now there are two locations – the original fine jewellery shop and studio on the north side of the street, and a new, fun and funky costume mecca on the south – with hundreds of styles between them, and a little something to add to everyone’s jewellery box.

Holy Hermès

Holy Hermès

I recently attended the grand opening of Toronto’s brand new Hermès store at 130 Bloor St. W., just a hop across the street from the old location. The stunning space mixes modern (sleek metal, limestone and wood displays) with traditional (moulded glass light fixtures originally designed for Hermès in 1925), and provides 221 square metres of space to show off the beautiful leather goods, whimsically printed scarves, colourful bracelets, and equestrian-inspired ready-to-wear. The party was one of the best I’ve been to all year with champagne flowing, tasty treats circulating and Toronto’s most fashionable mingling about (this was one RSVP people didn’t pass up). Even if a diamond-dripping Kelly bag isn’t on your shopping list (oh yeah, it’s there), the store is worth a visit to check out Parisian style at its finest.

Designed by local artist Ryan Johnson, the large shopper features a stylized graphic image of florals and charming folk details inspired by Spring 2009 trends. A morning run, a spinning session, perfecting the plank – coming up with ways to break a sweat is easy; keeping my exercise wear smelling fresh however, is another story! But with the help of this detergent, dirty, dingy, workout wear will be a thing of the past. No Sweat’s active ingredient, Bio-Blast, removes odours caused by bacteria and oil trapped in activewear. Effective in cold water, the highly concentrated formula left my gear with a light citrusy scent, and best of all, managed to salvage my favourite white workout tee from its (embarrassing!) pit-stained predicament. This little bottle has earned a permanent place on my laundry-room shelf.

As much as I've tried to deny it, every time I go shopping for pants, there's no way around the truth. Well Suited

Well Suited

Bespoke is the be-all and end-all of custom-made suits. The term bespoke comes from London’s Savile Row. The saying, “to be spoken for,” meant that a certain bolt of fabric had been claimed by a customer and could not be used until his suit was entirely completed. Bespoke is more than just custom-made. Entirely handmade suits are tailored based on a series of measurements (not an existing pattern), and according to the customer’s every request. To carry on this tradition, tony Toronto shop, Harry Rosen, has just made a spectacular addition - a 4th floor bespoke studio. From a starting price of $3,450, your man can have a one of a kind, beautiful suit made just for him.

Carried Away with SATC

Carried Away with SATC

It was lovely to see old friends again on Wednesday night. It had been a few years, and although Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha were a little older (with mentions of wrinkles and reading glasses) they looked just as stylish as ever. Even the crowd at the Toronto premiere of the new Sex and The City movie was slickly turned out (though I did feel bad for whoever was sitting behind the gal with the tall feather hat). A gorgeous and age-defying Kim Cattrall introduced the film in a stunning, pink one-shouldered number to a standing ovation and set the bar high for the clothing we were about to see. My favourite fashion moment was Carrie’s wedding dress scene (hope I’m not giving anything away that the trailers haven’t) – each frock was absolutely breathtaking and totally over the top, just what we would expect from the gal who had been as closely (if not more) connected to fashion as she was to men during the show’s run. I was also pleasantly surprised by Miranda’s new moxie – her clothes, hair and makeup all looked a little more glam than I’d remembered. I left the movie completely satisfied and give it two heels up – for the real portrayal of the relationships in a woman’s life, by characters we’ve come to know and love. And, of course, for the fab fashion.

Personalized Jewellery

Personalized Jewellery

I was a wreck last week when I couldn’t find my favourite charm necklace. It’s a simple silver chain with a series of tokens I’ve collected along the years – a silver starfish my father gave me, a classic Tiffany & Co. lock and a rocker-esque rose and thorn charm (for some reason this odd combination feels very me). But in its absence, I designed a new necklace from Vancouver-based Luxe Design. You start by choosing a base from several styles of silver chain, then fill it up with charms – everything from flowers and gemstone beads to empowering words and personalized, stamped name plates. In about a week, you’ll find a unique piece of jewellery at your door. I’ve since found the necklace I was looking for, but I’ve made room on my neck for this new one, too.

Suede Skimmers

Suede Skimmers

Create space in your suitcase by packing a pair of neutral flats. When it comes summer travel, I’m all about packing light. The only problem? I always end up sacrificing precious suitcase space to a mountain of shoe options (I like to cover my bases!). These perfectly neutral flats, though, may be the solution to my packing woes. Soft and bendable enough to be stuffed into an overnight bag, the recycled rubber soles will keep my feet happy on long days spent sightseeing in the big city or on leisurely strolls at the cottage. And come nighttime, these Mary-Janes will look great paired with a swingy summer dress. Now all that's left for me to do is book some travel plans!

Feeling good in your bikini takes on a whole new meaning with H&M’s swimsuits for WaterAid. Established in 1981, WaterAid is an international charity that works to combat poverty by providing the world's poorest people with access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene education. For the past six years, H&M has designed a special WaterAid bikini, with a portion of the bathing suit’s sales supporting the not-for-profit organization. This year’s bikinis are bright and graphic, which make them perfect for an exotic summer getaway. The best part? They make a bold statement about your style – and your heart.

All Dressed Up

All Dressed Up

As most of you know, Wish staffers absolutely love great food, great fashion and a great bargain. So we’re all excited about this weekend’s The Clothing Show at the Better Living Centre at the Exhibition Place in Toronto. Shop from more than 300 booths stocked with unique jewellery, artisan exclusives, and, of course, clothing! What I love most about this semi-annual event is that it celebrates independent Ontario designers and has now begun to draw boutiques from Montreal, Halifax and Vancouver. There are also daily runway shows throughout the weekend. This season’s buzz surrounds my faves Dagg and Stacey showcasing the Toronto label’s Marie Antoinette-inspired spring collection. Keep an eye out as well for edgy yet elegant jewellery by Scott Wilk, and funky wooden handbags and rings by Britt Olauson.

Mrs. Green Jeans

Mrs. Green Jeans

Does the world need another denim collection? Arguably, no. Does the world need another eco-friendly jean? Definitely so. This spring, Mavi is introducing its first Aegean collection of organic jeans for men and women. I’ve been sporting the Zoe straight-leg and can’t take them off. They’re a perfect basic – the fit is long and lean (but not skinny) and decisively flattering, the organic denim super soft, and the wash dark and even, all for less than $120! Plus, they come with a fun rope belt that ties into this season’s nautical moment. I recommend everyone gets themselves into a pair of these green blue jeans.

Disco For a Good Cause

Disco For a Good Cause

If you’re looking for an excuse to put on your ’70s disco diva best and get down on the dancefloor this weekend, Buy Design for Windfall is it. Happening this Saturday, April 26, at the Distillery District’s Fermenting Cellar in Toronto, the event features disco dancing girls and guys, the hottest disco tracks to groove to on the light-up dancefloor, retro nibblies, signature cocktails, a Warhol-themed silent auction area and hosting duties by Fashion File host Adrian Mainella. It’s all in aid of Windfall Clothing Service – Canada’s only new clothing bank, which collects hundreds of thousands of pieces of new clothing per year from some of the biggest manufacturers and retailers (items often otherwise headed for the dumpster). They distribute these to almost 100 social service agencies in the G.T.A., including shelters, community centres, job placement programs and refugee reception centres, providing the self-esteem boost that I think we can all agree a new outfit gives. Tickets are $75 each, or 6 for $375 – canapés, drinks and extreme disco fabulousness included. Go to buydesignforwindfall.ca for tickets and more info.
- Rani Sheen, Copy Associate (who’s been volunteering on the Buy Design creative committee all year and is super excited to finally get out her gold lamé and boogie on down!)

Not Just for Pandas

Not Just for Pandas

As Canadians increasingly look for eco-smart solutions, designers are seeking new ways to make fashion greener. So what’s fashion’s Next Big Fibre? Bamboo.
Besides being the fastest-growing plant on Earth, bamboo is naturally hypoallergenic, biodegradable and highly breathable – which makes it the perfect material to make clothing that’s as friendly to the body as it is to the environment. And the latest designs blend bamboo with Spandex, hemp, linen and cashmere, making them ultra-stylish and definitely luxurious. We love this slinky sweater wrap from L.A.-based eco-clothier Viridis Luxe. And with new bamboo fashions available at Reitmans, Roots, Laura’s and Cotton Ginny, head-to-toe bamboo has never been as easy – or as fashionable.

Eco Luxe

Eco Luxe

I remember when eco fashion meant itchy and ill-fitting hemp t-shirts. But thankfully, leaps and bounds have been made in this arena and it is more than possible to look fabulous while making a difference. On a recent trip to New York City, I spotted three designer lines that are worth the airfare to pick them up (but only if you offset your carbon emissions at carbonzero.ca).
1. Go Green Go by Phillip Lim is a collection of organic cotton items including a gorgeous goddessy gown (at his New York store, 31philliplim.com, or Barneys New York, barneys.com).
2. Repetto’s timeless ballet flats now come in organic denim, in a collaboration with boutique denim brand Ernest Sewn (at Barney’s New York, barneys.com).
3. And when vegan actress Natalie Portman had trouble finding animal-friendly shoes, she created her own line for Té Casan (order online at tecasan.com).

Everyone at the office knows I practice yoga every chance I get, but what they don’t know is I don’t have the most attractive yoga wear. This is fine by me, but recently the art department needed me to pose for some yoga pictures, for which my old garb didn’t quite make the cut. As usual our fashion girl Alison came to the rescue with these pieces from Dedicated Clothing. I’m a big fan of Roots’ yoga line, but was pleasantly surprised by these. Don’t be put off by the website’s lack of lustre – the clothes are super comfortable (no strangling yourself on crisscrossing straps) and made from soft fabrics like bamboo and supplex (a cross between nylon and lycra), plus I love that they are all designed and manufactured in Canada.

Jack Purcell: Canadian Badminton Star

Jack Purcell: Canadian Badminton Star

When I was growing up, my dad had a pair of these clay-court tennis shoes from his college days in the ’60s. I’ve always thought they were cool – but now I’ve got to get myself a pair. Last week, we were working on a Saturday and our creative director Sandy Kim came in dressed nearly head-to-toe in black wearing a Muji version of this old-school tenny in pristine white. She looked stylin’ – but super comfortable. A couple days later, Wish food director Andrea Stewart arrived at the office in a pair of Jacks, again with just the right mix of fashion and comfort. I was starting to feel downright envious. But my craving reached critical mass when we were putting the finishing touches on our upcoming feature home story – a beautiful old house renovated to gallery-like perfection – and there, in one of the photos, was a pair of Jack Purcells, the perfect lived-in accessory to the gorgeous front hall. This weekend, shoe shopping will top my list.

Oh To Be 21

Oh To Be 21

I’ve just completed my first online order at the Canadian Forever21 website (canada.forever21.com) and I’m thrilled with the experience. I’ve liked the youthful line since it only existed in the US, but even with two Canadian locations now, I find the stores way too busy and hard to sort through. So I was happy to find the online shop easy to navigate. I quickly racked up quite a shopping cart and had to cut a little from my list. But the green satin dress ($34.50), plaid jacket ($45.80), fitted vest ($27.80) and silver sequined tunic ($41.80) had to stay. I felt much less guilty when I discovered that you save 20% on orders over $50 (for a limited time) and get free shipping when you spend $75 or more (the website said 5-10 business days, but it arrived in two!). Here’s to a painless process that wasn’t too hard on my wallet, either! I’ll definitely be going back for Christmas presents for girlfriends.

During L’Oréal Fashion Week here at City Hall, I ran into Globe and Mail columnist Karen von Hahn who was wearing an awesome necklace. “This is the one piece of jewellery that’s going to carry me through the season and beyond,” she said. “It’s long, it’s heavy, and I love it.” She got it at Response Clothing on Queen West. “The owner, Glynis, has all this fantastic statement jewellery and right now some really cute boots!”

L’Oréal Fashion Week - Day 5

L’Oréal Fashion Week - Day 5

As L’Oréal Fashion Week drew to a close, Day 5’s busy roster meant there was no time for slowing down. A jam-packed day featuring some of the week’s most anticipated designers didn’t disappoint. Rudsak, a Canadian favourite, took us to the Serengeti with sand-coloured safari jackets and stiff cowl-neck dresses. Thien Le swapped his usual gowns for golf gear with his new sporty Le. T collection and Nada Yousif’s eye-catching colours and madras prints were interesting and fresh on dresses with convertible hemlines. But it was Paul Hardy’s dramatic capsule collection that stole the show. His stunning Grecian goddess dresses have me anxiously awaiting spring’s warm weather.

Fabulous <i>FASHION</i>

Fabulous FASHION

Two weeks ago I attended the FASHION Magazine 30th Anniversary Gala and asked the Wish fashion girls for wardrobe help. In the end, I chose a perfect LBD from Paris-based Canadian designer Tara Jarmon (apparently “the most popular dress brand in France”) and this pair of Mary Jane pumps from Cole Haan. When I first put on the shoes, I thought, “They’re so comfortable, they must have rubber soles.” But when I took them off to inspect, I noticed the soles were leather – but there was a little Nike Air brass plaque – turns out they’re made with Nike Air technology. Such cute shoes! And so much more comfortable than your average 4-inch heels!

L’Oréal Fashion Week - Day 4

L’Oréal Fashion Week - Day 4

Day four had it’s challenges for Wish, including sick staffers and internet upsets, but the runways shows turned out a rich variety of fashions. We were first treated to an eco-conscious show at Fashion Takes Action where the designers proved that hemp, soy and organic cotton can be crafted into truly beautiful garments. Next up were the designs from the top students at Fanshawe College, a Pakistani-inspired collection from Saniya Khan, modern body-con brights at Stephen Trigueros and a unique study of contrasts from Ula Zukowska. Last, but surely not least, Aqua Di Lara debuted their sexy spring swimwear.

L’Oréal Fashion Week - Day 3

L’Oréal Fashion Week - Day 3

Day three of fashion week was the busiest by far and we had a whole Wish crew out to cover the shows. It was a big night with headliners Andy The-Ahn and David Dixon anchoring the evening. The fun started at 4pm and continued to well past midnight. Two Project Runway Canada hopefuls, Franke by Kendra Francis and Greta Constantine by Stephen Wong (of PRC) and Kirk Pickersgill, also showed their collections offsite, which kept us zipping across town all evening.

Bid Good, Donate Better

Bid Good, Donate Better

We love that the theme of this year’s Look Good, Feel Better Ball (to raise money to provide wigs, cosmetics and toiletries for women suffering from cancer) in Toronto on Nov. 17 is Hollywood. And so the organizers are looking for new or gently used designer handbags for the auction. Bid on one (starting at a fraction of the retail cost) to get the Hollywood “it girl” look down pat, or even better donate one to help raise money for this great cause. It should be a great party to boot (and bag)!

Wish is proud to donate this gorgeous black leather Yves Saint Laurent tote to the LGFB ball!

L’Oréal Fashion Week - Day 2

L’Oréal Fashion Week - Day 2

Day two began with heavy rain, but a slew of spirited shows brightened things up. Two excellent shows by Philip Sparks and Bustle got me excited about menswear. Nada and Indiva showed beautiful options for us ladies. Ginch Gonch heated things up with half-naked models in cheeky undies. And one of my favourite designers, Joeffer Caoc, topped the night with his stunning eveningwear.

L’Oréal Fashion Week - Day 1

L’Oréal Fashion Week - Day 1

The first day of L’Oréal Fashion Week had me running all over town viewing the country’s best basics (high end from Tevrow + Chase and mass appeal from Joe Fresh Style) and getting excited about the future of Canadian fashion. The day’s highlights included the impressive new home of Fashion Week – a big, white tent in Nathan Phillips Square, seeing Canadian stunner and international superstar, Heather Marks, open the Joe Fresh Style show, and a sneak peak at the finalists’ collections from Project Runway Canada (sorry…I can’t spill).

Shernett Swaby: Spring Fling

For us, Fashion Week kicked off a little early this year with the unveiling of local designer, and Project Runway Canada contestant, Shernett Swaby's romantic Spring 2008 collection last week. Her signature detail work included origami-like folds, delicate ruffles and skillfully applied appliqués on everything from soft dresses to tailored pants. Linens, chiffons and drapey silks in a sweet, feminine palette of vanilla and peach speak to her previous experience as a lingerie designer. My faves included a sparkling, show-stopping, drop-waist flapper dress and a stiff, bright orange trench – perfect for making a grand entrance. I’ll be glued to my TV set Monday nights to watch more of her designs grace the runway on Project Runway Canada.

Style with Wit

Style with Wit

Elle fashion director and Project Runway judge, Nina Garcia’s book, The Little Black Book of Style (HarperCollins Canada, $23), had been sitting on my desk for a couple of weeks when I finally picked it up. First the cute illustrations by Ruben Toledo drew me in…then I flipped and read a little bit…soon I was hooked and couldn’t put it down. Written in a cheeky tone, the book dishes practical fashion advice (how to find a good tailor) in a down-to-earth way (she encourages mixing Prada with H&M). And I give thanks to Nina for confirming what I’ve always believed – that perfection is overrated!

Happy 20th!

Happy 20th!

Mendocino is celebrating 20 stylish and successful years in business, and has grown to 10 stores across Toronto that carry such sought-after brands as K by Karl Lagerfeld, John Varvatos for Converse and Tevrow + Chase. But we think the chicest item in store this month is the limited edition “She’s Someone You Know” t-shirt. Featuring silhouetted images of Canadian personalities such as singer Sarah Slean, gossip columnist Elaine “Lainey” Liu and model Monika Schnarre, 100 per cent of the net proceeds will go to The Jocelyn Foundation. This organization is helping to stop violence against women through education, support and fundraising. Wear your t-shirt into any Mendocino location on Saturday October 20, and receive 20% off all purchases.

Broadway Rag Revival

Broadway Rag Revival

I went to the Elgin Theatre the other night and a fashion show broke out. Opening night of the touring production of Tony Award-winning musical The Drowsy Chaperone in Toronto was a hit both on-stage and off. Arriving patrons were greeted at the box office by theatre staff dressed in reworkings of the grand uniforms of the golden era of 1920s Broadway, when shiny buttons and white gloves were standard issue.

Designed by Canadian fashion label Pink Tartan, this modernization of a tradition included smart navy A-line dresses with capes or cardigans for women, and tailored suits with vests for men. Gold cording and antique gold hardware completed the looks. All very stylish, tasteful and tasty – fresh but familiar.

The show itself is fun, funny and inventive, try to catch it on its 30-city tour in 2007-2008. Visit dancaptickets.com.

Supermodel Story

Supermodel Story

In a world of blue-eyed blonds, and Brazilian babes, model Alek Wek stood out with her ebony skin, bald head and full lips. This week, her autobiography dropped on my desk, in which she tells her story from growing up in war-torn Sudan, fleeing the country on foot to being discovered in London and becoming an internationally recognized supermodel. I loved the impact that Ms. Wek’s striking face made on the fashion world and I can’t wait to read her story.

Cute & Comfy

Cute & Comfy

I was invited by Mephisto to preview the new fall line and pick out a pair of shoes for myself. I have to admit, I was a little hesitant because the only person I know who regularly wears Mephisto is my dad. Right now I’m more in the market for statement-making platform heels than comfortable walking shoes. But I was pleasantly surprised by the new sleek shapes in this season’s must-have patent leather! I left with preppy-chic black patent leather loafers (and may even be back for a pair of sweet mary-janes) and my feet thank me when I slip them on instead of the heels.

Organic Fashions

Organic Fashions

The one trend we’ll never get sick of is going green. As it picks up speed, more retailers are including organic fabrics in their lines and the designs have evolved way beyond basic tees. I love the organic cotton dresses, wide-leg pants and undies from H&M. Cotton Ginny has introduced several new fibres into their basics collection including soy, corn and bamboo. And at the high end of things, a group of top Canadian designers are coming together for a fashion fundraising extravaganza called Fashion Takes Action to raise money for Environmental Defence.

Way Cool Sunglasses

Way Cool Sunglasses

The sunglasses of the season are definitely the Ray Ban Wayfarer. Designed in 1952, these shades have remained popular since then with sales in the millions. They have been key to style icons throughout the 50’s, 60’s and 80’s and were famously worn by Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn (Breakfast at Tiffany’s), Andy Warhol and Tom Cruise (Risky Business). Today, celebs like Chloe Sevigny and Sienna Miller have helped bring back the style.
