Say Cheese
How would you react if I told you getting your teeth cleaned could be a relaxing and enjoyable experience? With awe and disbelief, I’m sure, but it’s the truth. Impressions, The Dental Hygiene Spa in Toronto’s east end, is revolutionizing oral hygiene. Where else can you sink your toes into a pair of plush slippers, sit by the fire and read a magazine or watch your favourite show while you wait for your appointment? If that’s not enough, you’ll enjoy a paraffin-wax hand treatment while you decompress in a massage chair. Regular checkups? Piece of cake. My hygienist will be seeing a whole lot more of me.

My Current Obsession
Walking in through the delivery entrance, then past a service kitchen and down two flights of stairs to arrive at the Calvin Klein Secret Obsession fragrance launch certainly had me bewildered. It took me far more than a minute to register where I was. But the gated door and cavernous room finally revealed the secret location – a bank vault! And what a unique place it was! The below-ground vault was swathed in candlelight and decorated with delicate flowers and cut-crystal candelabras, creating a romantic and mysterious scene, which fit perfectly with the new scent. This latest fragrance from Calvin Klein is a fruity, floral take on the original oriental-based Obsession. It’s sexy and sophisticated and sure not to be kept secret from fragrance lovers for long.

Sensual Citrus
For those who want to keep aging at bay, I’ve got a big secret in a small package: Tangerine Aromatic Care from Darphin. Oil is a very effective moisturizing agent, and this elixir – with both carrot and orange essential oils – melts onto the skin’s surface, keeping it quenched all night long. Apply after cleansing and it plumps up fine lines and gives skin a radiant glow, even the next morning. The bottle may be small (15 ml), but at only a couple of drops per application, it lasts and lasts. If the lovely scent (courtesy of tangerine extract) isn’t enough to keep this anti-aging weapon in your skincare arsenal, your new flawless face will be.

More than Makeup
If you’re on the hunt for a new mascara, lipstick, nail polish or eyeshadow, look no further than the “Go Pink” Revlon display at your nearest drugstore. For the month of October, Revlon will once again raise funds for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation through sales of its top-selling products and a limited-edition blush that I believe creates a perfectly natural, rosy cheek.

Fresh Faced
I’ve always had a hard time finding an oil-free cleanser that actually works. However, a few months ago, I came across this gel cleanser by NeoStrata that’s perfect for oily, acne-prone skin, dilated pores and blackheads. It removes built-up impurities and dead cells, leaving your skin feeling soft and fresh. It contains 4% glycolic acid, a natural derivative of sugar cane, which when used daily is said to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, making skin look younger. With consistent use, I’ve found my complexion has dramatically improved. Not only is my skin less oily but I’m noticing fewer pimples, too.

Hot-Rock Rubdown
When owner Jess Fletcher opened her BE Studio, she wanted to create a community space where people could find balance and well-being. Befitting its location on the western edge of Toronto’s College Street strip, BE Studio is cool and sleek, but down-to-earth and decidedly less pretentious than some mega-spas downtown. An all-white decor puts you at ease, a quaint patio allows you to sip your Starbucks pre-rubdown, and simple, skylit rooms offer lots of privacy while you enjoy your treatment. I chose the hot stone massage, and was surprised when my therapist, Karen Dansingani, not only placed water-heated stones strategically on my body, but used them in addition to her hands in order to achieve a more “intense manipulation” of my muscles. The stones are meant to help with a variety of ailments including insomnia, and I was so relaxed later on in the evening that one glass of champagne nearly put me to sleep. And sleep I did – until 2 p.m. the next day (for the first time since my teens!). Bonus: BE also offers yoga classes infused with Thai massage for those who want to pose and be pampered at the same time.

Cosmetic Keeper
Until recently, packing consisted of cramming all my must-have beautifying products into a couple of Ziploc bags (even when I wasn’t boarding a plane). Why Ziplocs you ask? Well, it’s an ingrained fear of mid-travel explosions based on past experiences. For me, they seem to be inevitable. Body wash, lotion or toothpaste somehow manages to explode in my overnight bag, putting my clothes at risk. Recently, I came across these super-stylish cosmetic bags from Kate Spade and I started to rethink my whole packing method. These jewel-toned bags (fashioned after Monet’s gardens) come complete with wipeable liners in the event of a bottle mishap. My weekend jaunts to the cottage just got a whole lot more stylish.

Covet This
When I first heard that SJP was creating another perfume, I had no doubt that Covet Pure Bloom would be as fabulous as her previous scents. Its aroma is just as striking as its gold and amethyst-toned bottle (designed perfectly to display on your dresser). Similar to the original Covet perfume, Pure Bloom’s scent has undertones of musk and sandalwood. But it’s the tropical addition of coconut water and exotic flowers that sets this one apart. The result – a sweet, musky scent that’s not too heavy to wear during the day. This stunning fragrance will be getting a spot on my dressing table between Parker’s other glorious creations, as soon as it comes out this month!

Wrinkle-Free, For Free!
I am always blissful when my beauty products run out because that can only mean one thing: a guilt-free trip to the mall. What makes me even happier is getting free samples. Needless to say, I was thrilled when I found out that Dermaglow is giving away its number-one wrinkle cream with the purchase of Dermaglow Nuvectin Advanced Wrinkle Therapy. Clinically proven to reduce the appearance of fine lines by up to 50%, Nuvectin Advanced uses peptides to relax facial muscles, and regenerate skin by increasing collagen production and thickening the epidermis. That, combined with antioxidants, vitamins A, B6, C and E and botanical extracts, makes this product the perfect defence against those hard-to-get-rid-of wrinkles – let’s just hope this tube doesn’t run out too soon!

Summer Beauty Rituals
For me, summer means heat, humidity, frizzy hair, breakouts and sandal-ravaged feet. Naturally, trips to the spa become even more necessary. I was recently treated to a day of pampering at the downtown spa Ritual (it’s actually two separate locations, just a couple of doors away from each other) before a friend’s wedding, and couldn’t have been happier with the results. I had a fabulous facial by Samantha (paying $70 for the Signature Ritual Face Treatment was well worth it for the more thorough cleanse). Nikki blew out my hair to silky perfection – it was sleek and smooth and held up even on this extremely humid June day. I had the quickest bikini wax I’ve ever experienced, and last, but not least, a super-long lasting pedicure by Julia (my toes still looked fab two weeks later). I definitely recommend this spot the next time you need some beauty upkeep or simply a little pick-me-up!

How Sweet It Is
It’s already the beginning of August, but with all the touch-and-go weather we’ve been experiencing, you’re probably wondering whether you’ll get to relish any time outside this summer. Since I’ve never really been keen on waxing, I decided to put off any painful hair-removal rituals until I was sure I’d be booking it to a beach. Then I discovered Sugar Sugar.
As soon as you step inside their warmly lit studio, you can’t help but feel your tension melting away. A warm (read: no chance of burns!) ball of thickened sugar, water and lemon is carefully moulded over your skin, and then quickly flicked away, taking all the hair with it. The ingredients are 100% natural (and theoretically edible – ick!) so there are no chemicals or preservatives to irritate your skin or hair follicles. I also found it a considerably less painful ordeal than waxing. The lovely ladies at Sugar Sugar were friendly, efficient and professional, and I was totally beach ready in no time at all. Sweet!

Hooked on Honey
I have been infatuated with L’Occitane en Provence Honey Body Balm for years now. I couldn’t get enough of the soothing softness, intoxicating smell and dewy glow it left on my skin. But recently I went to replenish my stash and, to my horror, there was none on the shelves! Julie (the PR rep) kindly responded to my panicked email, letting me know that “it was discontinued in November, and there is not a scrap to be found anywhere.” She said that the line was relaunched as Honey Lemon, which still has the pure honey from Provence as its base. A few days later, I received a bottle in the mail (thanks Julie!) and gave it a try. Although it will never replace my body balm, I love the hint of fresh lemon and the texture is light but still super-hydrating. It’s my new summer scent!

Crazy for Coconut
I admit it. I’m a city girl who’s obsessed with the beach. Anything that looks, smells or reminds me of the beach, I want (especially coconut and vanilla scents). Manly, Yes
I’m not quite sure when it happened, but sometime in the ’90s, men started shaving more than just their face and neck. Somewhere along the line (likely in an upscale gym locker room rife with moisturizer-wearing metrosexuals), chests, backs, underarms and unmentionables got added to the list of areas seeing regular razor action. Luckily for those jumping on this new-found hairless bandwagon, Braun has a new all-in-one, wet shaver-slash-trimmer to make zeroing in on unwanted hair a no-brainer for the man in your life. Shave, trim with one of the three attachments, shave and trim at the same time, or use the “special comb attachment for very sensitive areas” (Ayaaahhh! Run for your lives!). Wet or dry, our money is on this being a hit, and not just downtown.

I Blush, You Blush
As a girl who is constantly looking for the perfect beauty products, I know how impossible finding the perfect shade of blush can be. In my quest of blush-discovery, I’ve subjected my little round face to several shades of orange, coral, and circus clown. I've even tried the I-just-came-in-from- a-jog, don’t-I-look-so-naturally-flushed look thinking I was looking pretty good, until my boyfriend told me I looked like I got walloped on both cheeks. I never thought I’d find that shade to make my face look contoured and healthy until I discovered Nars cream blush in Penny Lane. It’s a deep seashell pink with brown in it, and when applied correctly (after some practice in the bathroom alone, of course) gives me defined cheekbones with a healthy flush. Its creamy texture and thin compact make it easy to bring anywhere and use any time I need a little something to look alive. I can’t imagine this shade looking bad on any skin tone – it’s simply fabulous.

It's in the Bag
In the past, buying new beauty products invariably meant toting a shiny plastic bag out of the store. But I’m happy to report that Yves Rocher is completely eliminating the use of all plastic bags by June 2008! Which means reusable bags have finally hit the beauty counter, and the best part is that when cosmetics companies go green, they don't throw out the pretty with the plastic. Yves Rocher’s new wallet-sized reusable bag folds out into a printed full-sized satchel with shoulder straps able to support up to 2.4 kg! Unlike the average plastic bag, which is used for a mere 20 minutes, this bag will surely survive multiple shopping trips. Until the new bags hit stores in June, customers can ease the transition from paper or plastic with a free reusable bag.

Packaging Pros
Every tube of lipstick packs a powerful packaging punch. Adding it up, there’s the tube of lipstick itself, the box for the tube and the bag to carry it all home in. Since every little bit helps when it comes to protecting the environment, I was thrilled to hear that, along with the launch of Aveda’s sweet and refreshing Nourish-Mint lip treatments, their packaging was going green too. Post-consumer recycled materials, Forest Stewardship Council certified paper, wind-powered manufacturing and refillable lipstick cases are all helping to divert more than 6,600 pounds of packaging from landfills annually. Beauty with a conscience – now that’s a winning combination.

Liquid Assets
Drinking the recommended eight glasses of water a day has been top of mind lately, and my dry, winter-weathered skin would certainly agree. So to keep me well hydrated, I often (guiltily) turn to the convenience of plastic water bottles. Happily, our style director, Catherine, let me in on a new venture by Fiji Water to “green” every step in the production and shipping of their products. To go carbon negative, Fiji Water, together with Conservation International, is cutting carbon emissions, using renewable energy sources like wind to power their bottling facilities, reducing the amount of packaging and investing in reforestation and renewable energy projects which remove carbon from the atmosphere and help preserve the Fijian rainforest. So although I’m making an effort to use an old-fashioned water glass when I’m at my desk or at home, next time I crack open a bottle on the run, I’m going to choose one that’s as good for the planet as it is for my skin.

Beauty Buzz
Last week at L’Oréal Fashion Week, looking sharp was vital. Happily, staying right on trend was easy with Pop Beauty’s new Backstage Buzz palette. A double-ended eye pencil, three saturated shadows and four shimmering face powders helped me channel London’s cutting-edge catwalk style, in a smudgy, Kate Moss-y kind of way. Gold glimmer-infused colours were easy to apply with simple how-to tips right on the box. A few quick brushstrokes and I was runway ready in no time!

The Eyes Have It
If you have trouble with eyeshadow creasing or sliding away as the day progresses, read on! For me, wearing eyeshadow is nearly pointless since it usually goes missing somewhere between breakfast and mid-morning latte. And while I had heard of such a thing as eyeshadow primers, I didn’t have a lot of faith that they would actually keep makeup on my super-oily skin. But a few weeks ago I got my hands on a bottle of Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion, and I must admit, I’m in love. The only thing I can say is: it works. As in, my eyeshadow looks the same at 8 p.m. as it did at 8 a.m. Exactly the same. The colour stays true, and there are absolutely no creases. I don’t know how this works, and I don’t care. I’ll never go without this magic potion again.

It Makes Me Smile
I want my teeth to be sparkly white, I really do. And although I am a black tea, red wine and blueberry smoothie fanatic, I recognize that there are ways I could be pursuing my goal of blindingly pearly whites. But I have to admit, I just don’t have the willpower to do the series of daily whitening strips. Somehow I always forget to do it, or I just can’t be bothered to think about it every day for two weeks. Which is why I was so pleased to find out about this brand new whitening system that includes super-concentrated whitening toothpaste (brushing my teeth twice or thrice a day is something I’m religious about, so that’s easy) and four – count ‘em, four – sets of powerful whitening strips, designed to be used once a week for 30 minutes. Now that I think I can handle!

Beauty Junkie
I’ve only been to the famous West Edmonton Mall once in my life, during the summer of 2003 when I (briefly) called Edmonton home. And in my search for a can opener, a laundry basket, and other key household items that I needed for my sublet apartment, I must have missed Europa Boulevard, the promenade modelled after old Europe that’s filled with designer boutiques. Should I make a return trip, I would definitely make it a priority to seek out the Boulevard’s beauty mecca, Beauty Junkie. Though the shop has been open for almost three years, when we looked over the list of brands it carries, we were amazed this shop didn’t land on our radar sooner. It carries top lines like DuWop cosmetics, Bumble and Bumble haircare, B. Kamins, Chemist skincare and Clean fragrances. Bonus: If you can’t make it to the boutique itself, you can shop online – products can be delivered across Canada, with free shipping on orders over $75. - Andrea Janus, Beauty Associate

Winter Rx
Here in Toronto, we’re just not accustomed to getting this much snow. And while many people are sick of winter, I must confess that I’m actually very fond of the fluffy white stuff! As an avid snowboarder, I couldn’t be more thankful for all this precipitation, but I do wish there was a way to fend off windburn on the slopes. Snowsports enthusiasts, rejoice! I’ve recently discovered that Kiehl’s has the perfect solution in their All-Sport “Non-Freeze” Face Protector. This beeswax-based balm won’t ice over in the biting cold, shields your skin from the harshest of elements, and provides broad-spectrum sun protection with SPF 30. I'm happy to hereby report an end to painful, red, chapped cheeks!

What a Boar
I have always coveted that perfectly-straight-but-still-voluminous look of a professional blowout (especially since fighting the natural frizzy wave in my hair has become my life’s mission). When I was little, my unruly curls easily defeated hairbands, elastics and countless barrettes. But this past Christmas, I found a natural boar-bristle hairbrush in my stocking and I haven’t looked back since. With a little help from the blow dryer, my hair has been smoother, softer and shinier than ever. The brush helps pull my hair taut while it’s drying, but its bristles are soft enough to prevent split ends and breakage. I’m hoping this will mean the end of bad hair days for good!

Facial Files
Although I’ve heard it from experts (including the Wish beauty girls) a million times, I’ve just come to my own personal beauty revelation: Regular facials are the key to great skin. Who knew?!I had the opportunity to test the theory first-hand this week, when I spent an afternoon at the spa at Langdon Hall in Cambridge, Ont., a divinely decadent mini-getaway destination for weary GTA-ers. After checking into my country-chic room in “The Stables,” I made my way across to the spa for an hour of bliss, the Essential Facial ($95). Using gentle-yet-astonishingly-effective, marine-derived Phytomer products, my combination skin was examined, cleansed, exfoliated, steamed, extracted, serumed, masked and moisturized in such a way that I was glowy, not blotchy, for dinner that night (an insanely indulgent 12-course tasting menu in the Dining Room, but that’s another story). And I’ve pretty well stayed that way since. I think I might be on to something...

Esthetician Tip: Put a damp washcloth in the fridge for 5 minutes, then hold it against any extracted areas after a facial – it totally brings the redness down.

Lashing Out
I've been shopping around for new every-day mascara, as my current tube is running dangerously low. For years I've trusted the same brand to deliver clump-free, waterproof results, and my mascara has always stood steadfast by me through emotional breakdowns and impromptu party nights. Actually, it had such good staying power, it didn't come off without a fight.
Enter a new front-runner: Clinique's innovative Lash Power Mascara. The slim, oval brush makes reaching tiny outer lashes a breeze, while the long-wearing formula stays put through sweat and tears. Just one coat will lengthen your lashes and keep them perfectly defined all day long. But here's the best part – this smudge-proof, rub-resistant mascara will wash away with warm water alone! No makeup remover needed, and absolutely no scrubbing required.
Think it sounds too good to be true? Check it out for yourself at any Clinique counter.

Lotion to Lust For
You’ve never seen a more excited group of women than a bunch of beauty editors at a fantastic product launch. (Except maybe the crowds at Holt Renfrew’s Now or Never sale – they do get pretty worked up.) But at a recent lunch held by New Zealand beauty brand Linden Leaves, the whole lot of us could barely concentrate on what the founder’s daughter was telling us about the ingredients (including apples picked along the road-side in New Zealand) and the recyclable packaging (bonus!). We were too busy swooning over the lavender- and rose-infused body oils, the flaxseed body scrub and the fragrant bath bags. And the shampoo? I was trying to figure out how to get the samples into my purse while no one was looking. But the real wow factor came when we all tried the fig and licorice body butter. One editor rolled up the sleeves of her blazer so she could get as much onto her skin as possible before the bottle was passed on. What this all means, of course, is you should really check this stuff out.

Frilly Fun
The Hollywood writer's strike may have scuttled most of this season's award shows, but many of the pre-award parties are going on as planned. Which meant, luckily, that a small Canadian beauty brand still had the opportunity to show off its wares to a pared-down group of L.A. starlets at event company Silver Spoon's pre-Golden Globe Hollywood Spa Buffet. Calgary-based bath and body company Frilly Lilly is already a hit at shopping-destination-for-the-stars Fred Segal in Santa Monica, and made a splash during a limited run at Kitson in L.A. We couldn't believe we'd never heard of this super-cute line, which is is made by a boutique of the same name, and the Wish style team couldn't help but ooh and aah over the super-moisturizing lip butters, soothing bubble baths and pretty nail polishes when they arrived at our office. We're sure Frilly Lilly will gain new fans on the homefront as the brand expands into boutiques across the country.

Colour for a Cause
Work the beauty beat for a year and you’ll see that key trends keep coming around (i.e. red lips in the fall, pink lips for spring). And one trend that’s growing among beauty companies is to meet the consumer demand for products that are double-duty do-gooders, whether they divert funds to charity or are less harmful to the environment. But when a rep from Garnier came into our offices to tell us that proceeds from one of the brand’s hair colour products would be donated to charity, we could tell this was a trend that’s here to stay!
When the company launches its new Spicy Brown collection in the Nutrisse Cream line in February, the #56 Sangria shade will be available in 40,000 limited-edition boxes that feature a picture of Canadian singer Chantal Kreviazuk. Fifty cents from every one of these boxes sold will be donated to War Child Canada, one of Chantal's favourite charities, which develops humanitarian programs for children and their families in war-torn regions. Now that's a good reasion to channel your inner brunette! The boxes will hit stores on February 12.

Wave Goodbye to Frizz
As a wavy-haired girl, there comes a time (usually around 5 p.m.) when my once defined and bouncy waves disintegrate into a frizzy, limp mess – especially on humid days. Not good news if I have to go out right after work. Happily, at a Sunsilk product preview earlier this week, I was plied with the full range of their “Waves of Envy” products (to be released in the new year) – including this clever little spray. It has clear liquid moisturizers at the top, and blue styling liquid at the bottom, designed to work together to mimic the “beach wave” look. I just shake it up and spritz away, and my tired hair perks up, looks less frizzy and more like the “glamour waves” I’m aiming for. Just in time for the cocktail hour!

Luxe Lather
I love winter. I know, I know – it’s cold, you have to climb over three-foot snow banks to get from the car to the curb, it’s cold, snow tires are expensive, it’s cold. But I love bundling up and going for a walk while the snow is falling, or curling up with a good book and a steaming cup of hot chocolate.
Unfortunately, it’s also the time of year when super-dry air and super-hot showers conspire to give me dry, itchy skin. So I’ve been giving a new body wash a try for the last few weeks, and it’s kept my skin soft and itch-free! It’s made to moisturize while it cleans, and it’s infused with the scents of patchouli and soy extract to stimulate your senses during your morning shower. This is my new favourite part of the morning routine (after the first sip of tea, that is).

Face Off
Whenever I pick up a glossy celeb magazine to check out what’s new in tinseltown, Hollywood starlets always seem to be talking about how their gorgeous, glowing complexions are all thanks to Mario Badescu products. I’ve heard all about the miraculous Drying Lotion that Rachel Bilson says zaps a zit overnight, and the super gentle Enzyme Cleanser that’s the only thing sensitive-skinned Alicia Keys uses to take off her makeup after a long evening on stage (I paid attention).Until now it’s been tricky to find the products in Canada, so I’ve never been able to test them for myself, but last week I spied a bottle of the very same Enzyme Cleanser on Wish beauty associate Andrea’s desk, and wheedled her into giving it to me. And I love it just as much as Alicia does! It’s a refreshing, light, non-foaming gel texture, with a fresh scent that’s not chemical-ish (a pet peeve of mine). And it works in seconds, rinsing makeup right off without drying. The best part? The line is now available online from the Canadian beauty store BeautyMark.ca, shipping to anywhere in Canada (free shipping for orders over $99). Now that’s movie-star treatment.

Great Hair on the Go
The hairspray conundrum: how do you find a spray that will hold your shape and style, but won’t build up and harden to a crunchy mess? The solution: this nifty little can of fast-drying, extra-firm spray. I keep the mini version in my purse when I want to maintain a particularly good hair day (or fake it, at least!) I spritz my naturally straight hair and then lightly brush out the ends so they have movement, or when I curl it, I flip my head upside down and scrunch. No need to be trigger-happy, because this stuff goes a long way.
