A Note from Jane

A Note from Jane

When we started Wish five years ago, it was our plan to bring you the very best of fashion, beauty, home and food – because busy, stylish women, like you and me, want to put our best foot forward every day. The editors and experts at Wish worked overtime to find the solutions, deals, shortcuts and options to help make life easier – I can’t tell you how much we’ve enjoyed every step of the way.

Our loyal readers also pushed us to give more. It’s hard to imagine our 20-Minute Supper feature without wine pairings, but it was Jane from Ottawa who first suggested it four years ago: “I just received the second issue of Wish in the mail and read it from cover to cover. Then I went back to the website. We just had the Pesto Chicken Pasta – it was great! Next time, could we have a wine recommendation with the recipe?” Since November 2004, every Wish 20-Minute Supper has been paired with a complementary beverage suggestion.

Which brings to mind all the reader recipes we’ve printed. More than 1,000 entries to our 20-Minute Supper contests have helped raise the bar at dinnertime for hundreds of thousands of Canadian households. And you can still join the club! To find a fresh recipe for every night of the week or to track down one of your favourites, check out wish.ca/20minute – we’re still going strong.

In our last issue of Wish, editors and experts have identified many easy ways and insider ideas to build more wellness into your routine. I don’t think it has to mean giving up our favourite treats, just finding a balance. So, as we suggest in the pages of our last issue: Feel great. Look great. Eat well. Sleep well. Exercise (even when you’re pressed for time). Never get sick. Whistle while you work. Smile at strangers. Laugh – just because! It’s time to kick-start the best year of your life.

Experts have told us this is the beginning of the end of many of our favourite things. The current economic climate has made it impossible for us to continue delivering all you’ve come to expect from us here at Wish. It is with sadness – and many fond memories – that I say goodbye on behalf of every Wish staffer, supporter and contributor. It has been our pleasure.

It's going to be really sad to see this magazine go. I'm going to miss everyone who worked for the magazine and Wish them all the best.

Amber November 17, 2008 at 6:55 p.m.

I am so very sad at this news. I was introduced to Wish only a few months ago, and now I am hooked.

I will miss the best magazine out there.

Sarah November 17, 2008 at 8:41 p.m.

I miss Wish already.

Ruth November 18, 2008 at 8:51 a.m.

Really enjoyed the magazine from the first : I was a subscriber from the start.

chareen November 18, 2008 at 10:59 a.m.

This is very sad news.
All the very best to everyone at the Wish team..

Kailah November 18, 2008 at 11:19 a.m.

I agree with Amber. I too was just introduced and now I just love it. I am sad and I wish all the staff the best.

Licketysplit November 18, 2008 at 5:30 p.m.

I have been a subscriber right from the start but I noticed that things started going downhill about a year and a half ago. I felt it lost its focus on shopping ideas for the everyday woman rather than those who can afford to shop Holt Renfrew.

Amy C. November 18, 2008 at 9:01 p.m.

I have been a loyal reader of Wish, your daily blog and the 20 minute supper club for the past couple of years, so I find this news heartbreaking. Congrats to everyone at Wish for creating such a unique, entertaining and truly Canadian product - it will be missed.

Bev November 18, 2008 at 10:16 p.m.

First of all, I would like to say Bravo to Jane and her writers!! What an amazing job you have done! I am extremely disappointed in St. Joseph's Media for this announcement. I have been a loyal subscriber for the majority of the publication and have loved every minute of it. I have given subscriptions and have also renewed mine and my mother's (80 years and loves it). This past week, I renewed both again (early) as I requested 5 more as Xmas gifts. Trying to be ahead of the game, I also paid for them. I am curious as to why my credit card has already been charged (a couple of days ago) when this announcement had apparently been already made. I can only hope it was a breakdown between departments and it will be resolved by being reversed. B. Spencer

Wow. I must have been in the dark these last few years!! I just saw a plug on HGTV for the mag and I googled it and read it is no longer!! Like Amber and others, maybe you got your marketing wrong??

I have been a loyal subscriber for all the other home mags in Canada for YEARS but was not even aware of "Wish"???!! Wonder how many others are the same and it may have made a difference on your longevity??

ivana November 19, 2008 at 1:38 p.m.

I used to subscribe to InStyle and then I found Wish. I recommended it to all of my friends and everyone agreed it was a very relevant, stylish, leading edge CANADIAN lifestyle magazine to be proud of and inspired by. It is an enormous shame that such a quality magazine is being taken off the shelves while there is so much crap out there. I am perplexed by the decision makers who lack the vision to see ahead and support something of substance and with potential for great success. I agree, the marketing may not have been strong enough to leverage and promote the greatness of the magazine and this is the fault of the parent company. I truly hope that this is a temporary good bye and hope another company with sense of style and marketing acumen will have the smarts to take you over.

Jennifer November 19, 2008 at 2:22 p.m.

I have been a die-hard fan since the very beginning (religiously reading each issue from cover to cover!) and I can't believe that it's coming to an end! Where am I going to get the same kind of tips and tidbits all in one place?

Thank you to all the current and past Wish contributors. You have done an amazing job at providing a first-class publication over the years. I wish you all the best in your future endeavours!

Sasha November 19, 2008 at 4:18 p.m.

I've been a fan since it started. I'm very sad to see this magazine go. It was refreshing to have a Canadian magazine with interesting, well written articles and ideas that I could go out and find in Canada!

Melissa November 19, 2008 at 9:33 p.m.

This was my favourite magazine; it was both beautiful and incredibly practical. I'm very sad to see it go.

Linda November 20, 2008 at 6:20 a.m.

All good things must eventually come to an end, however in this case, it is way too premature. I loved this magazine. Thanks to all for enriching my life.

Danica November 20, 2008 at 10:51 a.m.

It was a great magazine to read as it offered a Canadian voice in an otherwise American market.

Michele November 20, 2008 at 4:06 p.m.

I'm SO disappointed! I JUST renewed my subscription and was looking forward to getting it in my mailbox every month. It was my absolute favorite magazine and I'm so sorry to see it go! No other magazine compares and this doesn't seem right at all.

Kristen November 20, 2008 at 6 p.m.

The first item on my christmas list this year was for a subscription to Wish. Its the one thing I looked forward to every month, especially the little do-it-yourself projects. I'm very sad to see you go, but am glad that I have some reminders throughout my home!

Allison Hunt November 20, 2008 at 6:56 p.m.

I'm so sorry to see Wish go. It was a great magazine put together by an incredibly talented team. I *wish* each and every one of them much success.

Laurie in Nanaimo November 20, 2008 at 7:32 p.m.

I am really sorry that Wish is folding. I have been subscribing for two years, and I looked forward to every issue. It is the only magazine that has it all, and I just really love the layout and format. And the recipes...easy and delicious. Now what am I going to read?

Valerie November 20, 2008 at 8:19 p.m.

I will truly miss this magazine in my mail box every month. All the best to the Wish team.

Becky November 20, 2008 at 9:01 p.m.

I've subscribed to Wish for years - I'm shocked and disappointed to hear that there will be no more issues. Thanks to all the Wish staff for their work on an excellent publication - I'll miss Wish (and as someone else wrote, I'll be watching for a revival!). Good luck to you all.

dagmara November 20, 2008 at 10:08 p.m.

You will be dearly missed. You are all very talented people. The art direction was particularly inspired.

Amber November 20, 2008 at 10:52 p.m.

I am so sad. I absolutely loved this magazine and just bought subscriptions for my friends. Wish had everything I wanted in a magazine it was like a younger hipper version of Canadian Living.

Patricia November 21, 2008 at 1:31 a.m.

I live abroad and the first I heard of this was when reading my 20-minute supper email this morning. I, too, am wondering - I just received the holiday issue yesterday and noticed that the departments had been condensed and the food editor was in the UK! (I knew that Suzanne Dimma was going to H & H). Also a few days ago I received the holiday gift subscribtion letter. I'm very disappointed - as someone said, this magazine was beautiful and practical. I used to stack them on a table with the colourful spines showing. Now I wish I'd kept my collection from before I moved! All the very best to the staff.

Lisa November 21, 2008 at 9:34 a.m.

How sad. I've been a reader from the start. It had something for everyone and IT WAS CANADIAN. Nothing was more frustrating then looking at something and find it's available only in the US.

"Wish"ing you all the best in your future endeavors - you must leave feeling proud of yourselves for the job well done.

Tanya November 21, 2008 at 9:55 a.m.

It's really unfortunate that Wish is leaving. I have been a subscriber/reader since it first came out and loved the fact that you gave practical and cost saving solutions while still giving splurge solutions (because sometimes, we all need to splurge on ourselves just a little). I'm going to miss seeing my subscription in my mailbox of this great little magazine.

Best of luck to all the Wish staff in their upcoming new endeavours. Thanks for all your hard work.

Sharleen November 21, 2008 at 12:46 p.m.

I am so sad! This is the only magazine I've ever loved enough to subscribed too. I'll definitely miss getting it in my mailbox, it was the only thing I'd get that wasn't a bill or junk mail!

Now where will I go to get everything I got from Wish? Is there a possibility of a relaunch in the future?

jane francisco November 21, 2008 at 3:50 p.m.

thanks to everyone who has taken the time to write here — and to the many readers who've sent emails to us at the office. it means so much to know that wish was appreciated. wish magazine has been a labour of love by (as many of you have pointed out) a very talented team. we'll miss you — and wish you the very best!!

Erin November 21, 2008 at 5:45 p.m.

I just logged on to renew two subscriptions and found out I can't! I have read this magazine for years and is the only one I have ever subscribed to.

Good luck.

Anne from Calgary November 22, 2008 at 9:01 p.m.

What a crying shame. This was the best magazine ever!!! I have 6 gift subscriptions for my friends and family. They all loved WISH too.I will really miss getting my magazine each month but look forward to the emails and its GREAT that your keeping the supper club online. THANK YOU !

Paula November 23, 2008 at 12:02 p.m.

I was just looking for a recipe for dinner tonight and saw this news. I am so bummed out. It was my favourite magazine. Good luck to the great staff. "Wish" I had saved all of my copies.

Coast November 23, 2008 at 6:29 p.m.

Like many others, I have read and subscribed to Wish almost from the beginning. I've bought subscriptions as gifts and tell everyone that they need to read it because it is only good CANADIAN magazine for young professionals!! It's really a shame, I even listed Wish as my favorite magazine on a recent fun survey at work. Despite my love for Wish I must agree with Ivana. If Wish is going to make a comeback, please go back to your roots, and fill the magazine with an affordable range of options with a few splurges. I really hope that Wish can find a way to come back!

Julie November 24, 2008 at 11:13 a.m.

Oh no! I love Wish and just renewed my subscription because I enjoy it so much. The Canadian aspect of it was the best. I could look at the fashion photography and know I could buy most of it right in my own city. I also loved the 20-minute Shape-Up Club. Wish is my favourite magazine and I'm sad to see it be a victim of our current economic climate. Will it ever come back??

Kelly November 25, 2008 at 9:46 a.m.

A high quality magazine that has been many times better than most magazines targeted at women. So much support from readers, maybe WISH can be recreated.

Diana December 15, 2008 at 8:15 p.m.

Oh how heartbreaking to find out today that my subscription to Wish will no longer be. I will definitely miss this magazine...I subscribe to a number of Canadian publications and if I had to give up most of them Wish was one of the ones I could not give up. I am also hoping for a revival in some form or another. I also promptly subscribed to the email newsletter & 20 minute dinner club. My recipe book is filled with torn out pages from Wish, and hope to continue to fill it with many dinner ideas in the future from my inbox.

Thank you for all of your hard work over the years! I feel like I am losing a friend.

Dajana from Edmonton December 15, 2008 at 9:54 p.m.

Wish was and always will be my favourite magazine! I am so glad I kept each issue I received (sometimes it pays to be a packrat).

Best of luck to everyone involved with the magazine! Ciao!

Heather December 16, 2008 at 1:33 p.m.

Having been a subscriber from the beginning I will miss "WISH"
It was consistently full of fashion, beauty, home decor tips and tricks. The recipes were generally easy and quick to prepare. Written in a concise and informative fashion for those moments when you had time to look through the magazine without having to face lengthy articles.

Heather December 17, 2008 at 9:05 a.m.

I am a magazine junkie and Wish was a favorite. I renewed it for as long as possible automatically with no question. I loved the concept and quality of the magazine and am very, very sad to see it go.

I did not have a problem with the affordability issue as I enjoyed the ideas provided and always felt able to transform them into a version which fit my budget.

I will continue to follow along with whatever content is available at wish.ca and like everyone else hope for a comeback.

Kim from St. John's December 22, 2008 at 8:34 a.m.

I really loved your magazine and have read it from the first issue. In fact I can remember participating in a survey before the magazine was launched, in which I indicated my preference for the name of the magazine, which was of course WISH! I really hope that we don't see all our Canadian magazines suffer a similar fate. I am no longer interested in reading an American magazine. Thanks and good luck to you all.

Stephanie from Toronto December 23, 2008 at 3:11 p.m.

As I am sure many others have expressed, I am terribly sad, surprised and disappointed to hear that Wish magazine is coming to an end. I have been a longtime subscriber and loyal fan, and I must say that Wish was my favourite magazine. No other Canadian lifestyle magazine compares... especially in the areas of art direction and content for my demographic.

Wish, you will be missed. Thank you to your talented staff for an amazing five years. I have my fingers crossed for a comeback!

West Coast fan December 24, 2008 at 12:04 a.m.

I too am really disappointed to see Wish fold. I am a buyer/owner of a gift shop and Wish was a great way for me to follow trends. I will miss this publication immensely. I had renewed my subscription and bought a gift subscription as a Christmas present for a friend to spread the word about the best magazine going!

Good luck to all the Wish staff.

M January 12, 2009 at 12:56 a.m.

No! I loved this magazine. I regret not getting a subscription to support it. Us poor Canadians are now left with very few magazines to chose from. :(

Winnie January 15, 2009 at 3:08 a.m.

I had no idea that the magazine was being discontinued! I am disappointed and saddened, as I have been a long time subscriber and introduced many of my friends to this magazine by giving it as a gift subscription. I will miss this magazine very much!

Lisa January 15, 2009 at 3:43 p.m.

Too bad I really loved your mag! It was hip and had a bit of everything! It was nice to read something CANADIAN for a change! Good luck to you all and thanks for the great issues!

Sheri January 19, 2009 at 2:19 a.m.

I love your magazine. Being Canadian, you could actually source out the products IN Canada!

Any chance it might be relaunched?

Chelsey January 19, 2009 at 9:26 a.m.

This is the saddest news! I have been following the mag since the first issue. I look forward to it every month. Good luck and start a new mag soon! Canadian content is the key!

Vicki January 27, 2009 at 4:58 p.m.

My daughter introduced me to this magazine last year and we're shocked to learn about the magazine folding. We are thankful we can still access the website. This magazine is one of the very best in content that we every have come across and most notably it was Canadian. Congratulations to you and your staff for a job well done. How are we going to manage to keep ourselves beautiful, in style, well fed and informed. We will miss you.

Rena March 14, 2009 at 5:59 p.m.

March 14, 2009

I have now received 2 editions of FASHION in lieu of WISH -- and have now asked for my money back. Like other readers -- I had renewed for 2 years (and would have been willing to pay more to keep it around had I known you needed it). There is no magazine like WISH!!!!

My 13 year old daughter and I used to fight over who got to read it first and my mother read it when she came over -- how many magazines can say that they can please 3 generations of readers?! I don't want my daughter reading about how to make your sex life better -- she's not supposed to have one for many years yet! and that is why it was so great for my family -- she got the beauty information without the sex talk! WISH was also realistic -- gave fashion, beauty tips for the REAL women in this country -- not just the ones who walk the runways in France.

I REALLY REALLY REALLY miss WISH!!!

Rena, Calgary, AB

Katie March 22, 2009 at 12:49 a.m.

Like Rena above me, I'll be asking for my money back. I have no idea whose idea it was to offer Fashion magazine instead of Wish, but what a disappointment. I make a decent living and care about how I look, but I have zero interest in reading a magazine where most of the shoes featured cost over $1000! Get real! Wish was a great magazine--a million times more interesting that Fashion, which I find VERY Toronto-centric and dull. It's nice to see that Wish still lives online, but it's not the same. I really looked forward to each new issue that arrived...I have never been a fan of Fashion Magazine, but gave it a chance when it came in the mail. Two issues later and I am more disappointed than ever. What a strange choice to replace a magazine about REAL CANADIAN woman with.
