A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

There are only so many book reviews we can accommodate in Wish, so I’m taking this chance to bring Graphic Witness (Firefly Books, $30) to your attention. It’s a collection of four wordless novels by four renowned political illustrators/artists from Canada, the U.S., Italy and Belgium.

Dating from the first half of this century, these woodcut graphic stories are more works of art than comic books, beautiful in their stark depiction of some of the more controversial topics of their time – racism, economic depression, war and poverty. Yes, it’s all a little grim, but really worth seeking out. Rich, striking little pieces of history – we give it several thumbs up. Watch for Graphic Witness in stores in later this month.
