Prevent Hair Damage
Tips to keeping your hair shiny and healthy
Never brush hair when it is wet. It’s more fragile and prone to breaking when wet. Work a detangler or conditioning spray through hair from the bottom up, and use a wide-tooth comb to get out any knots.
If you’re a regular heat styler, use a moisturizing hair mask about once a week. Leave it on for a good 20 minutes, covering hair with a shower cap or a towel to let product soak in.
Use a clarifying shampoo once a week to get rid of styling product build-up. They are more astringent than regular shampoos, so they’re not for everyday use.
Look for a round brush, ideally with natural bristles. It will help distribute your scalp’s natural oils and won’t break hair as easily as plastic or metal bristles.
There is no dispute: heat styling is one sure way to damage your hair. But the worst culprits are older tools, which get hotter the longer they are switched on. Newer ionic models distribute a consistent, less-damaging heat.
Keep in mind with any heat styling: the hotter the setting, the more potential damage you can do to your hair.
